ECO TEAMS meet regularly in Tring to discuss how to save themselves money and reduce their carbon footprint through taking action in their homes and lifestyles.

EcoTeams makes helping the environment fun, easy and effective. Whether it is with like-minded friends, neighbours, colleagues, or even strangers, EcoTeams connect people who want to reduce their impact on the environment and achieve something significant together.

Over a few months, you and your EcoTeam will identify and measure your environmental impacts - from the energy you use, to the choices you make when shopping.

The programme has four key features:

1. Becoming a team

You can either set up your own team, or become a member of an existing EcoTeam in your area or online.

If you decide to set up your own team, we will train you at one of our free training events, or you can use the website to guide you through the process. The website will also be fully equipped to help you recruit people into your team.

2. Measuring

Once you are part of a team you will start to measure your energy, water and transport use, and what you throw away or recycle each week. We’ll give you all the information you need to make these measurements, and your own profile to enter them into. By recording these measurements, you’ll be able to see how you are progressing, how your team is progressing and how you are all doing compared to the national average. It really is quite satisfying to see your bills drop and your carbon footprint shrink.

3. Acting

Measuring without acting would be a little pointless, as it is thanks to acting that your measurements will decrease. Acting will involve meeting with your team face-to-face, or chatting about what you are going to do online. You will decide as a team and as an individual what actions you can take. Some people may be able to insulate their whole homes, whereas others will save energy by putting tin-foil behind radiators on outdoor walls. We’ll give you lots of suggestions to choose from.

4. Celebrating

At the end of your programme we will provide your team with its results – how much less you are throwing away and the natural resources you have saved, as an individual, as a team, and across all EcoTeams. We’ll also give you United Nations Environment Programme certificates, in recognition of your achievement.

We think it is important to celebrate all you have achieved.

"EcoTeams is much more concentrated than other projects; it's not just one message. It's a programme that makes you think about the environment and your impacts in a much broader sense than just taking bottles to the bottle bank." EcoTeams participant, Nottingham
